Black and White is a poem written by Maya Angelou in 1968. In the poem, the speaker wonders about being "born into a religion of light" and being thrust into a world where there are so many other religions and philosophies, how do she know which one is right? In this quote, Maya Angelou seems to be saying that it is her own birthright to seek out the light. She says that she should find truth after surveying all the proof. She says that she should love or fight.

Of course, she goes on to say that this isn't always attainable. That there must be walls for whoever beams truth and light. And how can one speak on behalf of light when all they do is act black, but talk white? This quote seems to mean that when you know the truth, you must stand up for it, even if it means standing alone in opposition to what you believe in.

In this case I see the speaker as standing up for Light against Darkness because she believes that Light is better than Darkness.
